LCD (Liquid
Crystal Display) and DLP (Digital Light Processing)
LCD and DLP based projectors are currently the most popular presentation
display systems. Combined with a laptop, these devices are excellent for
traveling presentations. They connect easily to the video port of a computer
and let you project images on a wall or portable screen. There are three
basic categories for these types of projectors: Portable, Desktop and
Pro AV or large-venue installation projectors
Projector
Engine
Most projection systems today use polysilicon LCD panels (the small kind
found in your camcorder's viewfider) as the imaging engine inside the
machine. The distinguishing characteristic of polysilicon is that it casts
a more dramatic hue on a projected image than any other projection technology.
Digital Light Processing
(DLP) developed by Texas Instruments is the other predominanat projection
technology. The DLP engine (which is actually a semiconductor chip with
hundreds of thousands of mirrors etched onto it) is entirely digital.
Lamps
Most projectors today use metal-halide lamps that last a few thousand
hours, and usually costs between $300-$500.
